Cacti and friends

I started the draw night with figures, just playing with movement and structure a bit, and then good ol’ Tom Scholes shows up. Tom can draw anything if he wants to but he is mainly a background artist at the game company he works at and that’s all he draws at Draw night too. Which is way cool, I never think that kind of thing is too much fun when I’m drawing comics but he inspired me so I thought I’d do some backgrounds. You can see Tom’s background blog HERE. He does collabs also, an artist will draw a figure or something in one of his backgrounds, they are all on the blog, I have a few on there too. Fun stuff!

So here’s the sketches I did, I’d have to say the cowboy standing on the Cactus was the most fun. Let me know what you think, don’t be shy. If you’ve never posted a comment before don’t be afraid if it doesn’t show up after you post. All first time comments need approval to cut down on Spam. I get a lot of spam but I think one of my favorites is “your blog is very important, you are the new media”. That one always makes me laugh. I can’t imagine thinking to myself “Aw man, what a nice compliment, I’m totally approving this!” Someone needs to teach these Spam Ad makers how people really comment, they’d trick a lot more people into approving their comments, thus making products sold, because everyone who reads blog comments are looking for good deals on jewelry and porn. Right? Anyway enough ranting, here’s them sketches.

The thing I love about just drawing for myself at these draw nights is that I have NO idea what I’m going to draw. I just start with some anatomy and while I draw it I get ideas, I’m not saying they’re GOOD ideas, but they are ideas nonetheless. And it’s always fun to let the mind wander wherever it may go.  Here’s the sketches I did last night, I apologize if the buff dude shaving grosses anyone out, that was my intention. ;)

A self-portrait.
What a waste of soda

This dude loves shaving.

More sketches have been sent to me through e-mail, if you got one from me and want to share, send it my way! If it’s Invincible related it’ll probably end up in a trade paperback or Hardcover. I always do a variety of characters at these cons which is nice, it keeps things interesting for me. I’ll bet you can’t name em all!

San Diego Comicon was great! THANK you if you stopped by the table and talked with me or bought my stuff, I appreciate it all! I wish I had some great stories to tell but to tell you the truth I have no stories since I didn’t do much besides sit at my table the whole time. I drove down this year with Derek Hunter(Pirate Club), it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. 12 hours went by pretty fast, which was nice. We stopped in Vegas, stayed a night, threw away a few bucks then left.  I think I wanna do that again next year Derek! Huh? Wanna? Maybe I’ll drive for a few minutes next year. ;)
I shared a table with Rob Schrab in the Image section, he and his girlfriend are the nicest people. And for those that havn’t read Schrab’s work, you should check his stuff out. Scud is awesome, His Dvd’s are awesome, I can’t get that wooden leg song from Twigger’s holiday out of my head.

I really like collecting scans of sketches I did for people at cons, so if you don’t mind having other people see the sketch I did for you then just e-mail me from this site.  Some of the Invincible sketches will probably go in the back of a TPB or Hardcover. I took photos of some of the sketches I did but not many. At the bottom of this post are the sketches I DO have. Now on to the pics!

Here’s a sketch I did at draw night last night. I apologize for the ultra violence but it’s all in good wholesome fun right? and as Dave Chisholm said when he saw it, it’s a very confused suicide bomber.

KA-BOOM!

Here’s a photo taken at Comicon of me with Atom Eve!!! We were all super excited to see someone actually make a costume of a character of ours. Just totally surprising and completely awesome.
My shoes are SO rad!

And here’s some sketches I did for people. I’ll post more of these when I get them.

Thanks again everybody! See ya later.

Draw Night sketches

I don’t always post everything I do at draw night, but I figure I should to show you all the good and the bad and the unfinished. A lot of things don’t make sense, I’m just playing around. This is my last post for a while, I’m going to San Diego next week so I’ll be sure and post after that. See a bunch of you there!

Here I’m just playing with loose gesturing then tight pencils over it.

WARNING: don't hit girls!

Weird unfinished sketch.

I got nuthin

I don’t know why I drew her with one weird arm, looks kinda dorky. I’m glad this wild beast lady took time to throw on a tube top.

hey, what's up?

I penciled a quick little drawing of a random dude for Derek Hunter to ink, he turned it into ME. I like how it turned out. Thanks Derek!

Almost COMICON!

So I hope to see a lot of you at Comicon coming up in two weeks. I honestly can’t wait, I’ve been having so much fun at conventions this year, it’s great seeing all these different cities and I’m amazed that each show feels entirely different, they each have a life of their own even though they’re all just comic conventions and I’m basically doing the same thing at each one.  My friend and I are actually driving to San Diego this year, so that’ll be crazy. It’s about a 12 hour drive. I hope I don’t lose my mind as some do in solitary confinement, but at least we’re moving, and there is light, and windows that roll down, and good food, and music, and friends, and…
I’ll have plenty of original art for sale, pages, covers, sketches, etc. I’ll also have Prints.  I will have a sketch list this year with a limited number of sketches I’m doing for the whole con. So coming early would be best. But if you do miss out on the sketch list there is always sketches from my sketchbook, here’s two examples of what you’ll find in there, two new drawings i did today just for the San Diego con to sell to anybody that wants it. Also all my draw night sketches will be in there too. I will have paper available which I prefer to use, but if you have a sketchbook that’s fine, I’ll just have to lug it around if I don’t finish it that day. But either way it’ll be fine, I just want you to know if you don’t have paper I got you covered. See ya soon.

Heroes con was unbelievably awesome. It has so much talent there, I met some of my favorite artists, met some great fans of Invincible. Perfect con to go to, I might go again next year. We’ll see. And of course the southern food was great, I love me some Chili mac!  My next and last con of this year is San Diego Comicon! Can’t wait.
Last night was draw night, only 5 people showed up, it was nice and small. First up we got Batman, I didn’t want to post this but I figured I should post everything I do at draw night, good and bad. And it’s kinda bad, I messed up his waist/legs. I inked over a very quickly done Batman sketch I did and this was the result. I think mainly the waist is misplaced and elongated. Ah well.

Batman

Just some crazy drawings, I was havin fun finishing these with ink and gray markers.

What is under that dudes tie?!?

And lastly but not leastly, I did this sketch as kind of an ad of what’s to come. At Heroes con I shared a Hotel with Jason Howard, artist of the Astounding Wolf-man, and we came up with this concept we are thinking about doing. It was fun to just brainstorm this stuff, check it out. It’ll be the most exciting crossover that’s ever happened! heh.

I’m off to Heroes con in Charlotte North Carolina tomorrow. So if you’re going, you should come say hi. Robert Kirkman will also be there in the same area. Maybe I’ll have something more to post on next Wednesday. We’ll see. See ya! Here’s a few things for ya!

A panel from Invincible 50, pencils and inks by me.

Pencils to inks

Here’s a panel from Invincible 50, the Cecil Steadman story. Penciled by me, inked by Cliff Rathburn, and colored by Kelsey Shannon.

Here is the last Brit cover I did out of six. Go buy Brit! It’s great! Issue 7 comes out the beginning of July. Cover pencils and inks by me, colors by Kelsey Shannon.

He-man versus Collosor! I never even heard of Collosor before I did this commission, and I watched all the TV shows, collected tons of the toys. I enjoyed drawing this thing though, copic and prisma markers were used. Also white ink as a finishing touch.

Did a draw night last night. I haven’t drawn Pitt forever so I decided to try it out. Not TOO happy with how it turned out, I need to punch it up a bit if I decide to draw him again. I can’t imagine drawing this dude all the time though, that would suck. WAY too many fricken chains for my taste. The second sketch is just some old dude off the top of my head. Kind of a light draw night.

Turn your head and cough

I attended draw night on Tuesday, and I drew some scary ladies. Monster scary, and holding a gun that could blow off your head scary. Feel free to visually partake.

Well I hate giving attention to hackers because I know they LOVE hearing about repercussions of their mischief. But I thought I should let people know my Gmail and DeviantArt site have been hacked into and taken over and password changed, I’ve contacted both and so far my Deviant site is banned for the time being and Gmail is being looked into. But in the meantime if you get an e-mail from my Gmail just ignore it, it’s not me. And if you watch me on Deviant, I miss YOU. I love Deviant and it’s sad to see it go for now but hopefully the folks at Deviant can get things straightened up soon. And I would like to say to the hacker that so far he’s been pretty polite, he posted some stick figure drawing on my site and SO many people thought it was just me joking around, I couldn’t believe how many people posted and joked along with the drawing. I got more comments and views on that one than I have on any other REAL drawing of mine in a long time! So…thanks? Well unless he did MORE that I don’t know of yet, and that’s why I’m banned? I don’t know. Hopefully I find out more soon enough.
No drawing to post for now but if you dig podcasts check out this new one here>  GEEKSHOW

It’s a local podcast from here in Utah, some super cool people are doing it. Hosted by Kerry Jackson (a DJ from X96),    Jeff Vice (Film critic, Deseret News), and fellow draw night homie Derek Hunter (Comic book and movie artist) and a few others that I haven’t met yet so I forget. Sorry!

But I thought it was a lot of fun, nice reviews of comics and movies. I dug it. They do talk a little how we went to see Indiana, and yeah it was awesome. I nitpicked the way they handled the magnetism throughout the film, which is silly of me because there is SO much more that easily could be nitpicked like the fridge scene, the monkeys, but suspension of disbelief is a must for this film. Just rewind your age a decade or two while watching and you’ll love it! They didn’t speak to highly of Speedracer though, I’ve heard how BAD it is from a lot of people online, but based on Robert Kirkman’s enthusiasm, also Alan Tew and a couple other friends I know I NEED to go see this movie and just soak it in.

Go check Robert Kirkman’s blog, he posted a panel from issue 52 and gives a report on our lateness. I know issue 50 is horribly late and it’s FINALLY coming out June 18th. So sad. But good it finally has a release date! We should be back on some kinda track soon.

Here’s the cover to 54, colored by Bill Crabtree.

Stay owt of tha thyme streem Invincible!
